When I was small, but general rules of Thailand I'd say are:

Be weary of what you eat on the side of the road, things will always be cleaner at a restaurant.

The seafood will be fantastic. Try "Plaa Tot." My favorite. It's fried fish but the whole thing, bones and all, so good.

Beautiful beaches, wonderful people.

Enjoy yourself!

I was there ten or so years ago...

From hazy memory: we ended up getting a full time driver for like 30 bucks a day or something ridiculous like that. Took the cab ride in and the guy asked us when we'd be leaving again. Mentioned that he could be ours 100% of the time for like pennies. Dude was awesome. Parked outside the hotel at like 6 in the morning and drove us wherever we wanted then he'd just hang out where ever he dropped us off. It made things super easy.

Pretty much everything was sketchy there. Some of the guys from the boat got in real sticky with some rip-off outfit that rented them a shitty jetski then claimed they damaged it and wanted like 2 grand. I got all the recommendations about stuff like that (rentals, shopping spots, restaurants, etc) from the hotel concierge and had no issues. Recommend the same.

They'll try to sell you gems and silk. If you know what you're looking at you can get great deals, if you don't you can get glass and nylon. I avoided it, but a lot of the folks I was with tossed the dice. I'd say ~80% came out way ahead when they had it appraised back at home but a few did get junk. Caveat Emptor. Oh, and everything...I mean everything...is price negotiable. Even stuff like soda at 7-11. It's so cheap you won't even think about it, but the option is there.

Other than that it was a great time. Have fun.
